In 2023 we decided to uproot our previous lives near one of Denmark’s biggest cities and move back into nature and a community of family and neighbors.

What we moved into was an 100 year old abandoned homestead, and we would need all the help to get it up and running for that very first winter in our Danish farmhouse.

Being a student of literature and history I had taken an interest in old Danish houses, especially from the beginning of the 20th century. I could not tell you why, but something about that old way of living in the countryside seemed so appealing to me.

The Big Move

As with many other moves ours was done in a hurry, and time was very short. You see, we had hoped to be able to move in a bit earlier, since we needed to be out of our little cottage at the end of the month. But we could not move in or get the keys until the 15th of June, which left us two weeks to make the house that had now been abandoned by the previous owners into a livable home.

One Summer's Rain

July rolled in over us with thunderstorms and rain flooding the road beside our house. We had stacked up most of our boxes upstairs in order to have the space to continue the renovation downstairs, out of which only the bedroom was done at this point. Every other room still needed a deep cleaning of the floors and ceiling and two or three coats of paint on the walls. And that was only for the easier rooms, the living and dining room.

An Old Masonry Oven and its Firewood

An old masonry oven would be our only heat source in that very first winter at our Danish farmhouse. It was coupled up with the floor heating, and there would be no way of staying there for the winter if we could not get that system up and running.
